Behind the Diagnosis
Observations and analyses from the front lines of mental health treatment at the Psychiatric Institute of Washington.
My Experience
Working as a mental health technician at the Psychiatric Institute of Washington completely rebuilt my perspective on psychology. In my daily interactions with patients, I saw how diagnoses affect them day to day, not just in textbooks or in class. I spent my time charting, listening to my patients’ stories, and attempting to talk them through some of their most difficult times. Each patient taught me more about their diagnosis than could ever have been possible without this face-to-face interaction. These case reflections are from that time and capture diagnoses on a more human level. Real moments that revolutionized how I understand psychological disorders and the people who live with them.
